The poaching and recovery of the Rhino population
'I spent most of my working life in Johannesburg in the corporate computer world. In 1958 I had the privilege of joining Professor Phillip Tobias on one of his expeditions to the Kalahari, with the objective of documenting the Bushmen culture. During those weeks my passion for the African bush, culture and nature was burnt deeply into my soul. I retired from the corporate world in 1993 to found a safari company in Namibia. ‘The Big 5 Experience Exclusive Safaris’ proved very successful as it concentrated on bringing all aspects of nature to mostly small groups of overseas visitors. In 2003 I decided to sell the safari company and return to SA. Since then I have been involved with the scourge of wild life poaching and rhinos in particular, which resulted in writing a novel, HORN, (based 90 % on fact). published first in America in 2017. I have been living in Hout Bay, Cape Town, ever since I retired.'

NB. We hope to be able to have the April General Meeting in the Auditorium if it is ready by the 26th April, as the library hopes. Please ensure we have your correct email address and if you have a Telkom address please note that there are problems with sending out our mailings to them.
Our annual AGM will be held at the May General Meeting, 28th May.

Blaauwberg U3A General Meetings & Talks
Suggestions from members for future speakers are always welcome. As we are a not-for-profit organisation, we are unable to pay speakers normal fees, but a small gift is given to each speaker as a token of our appreciation. Forms for speaker suggestions are available on request.
If you suggest a speaker, try to bear in mind that the person needs to not only be passionate about their subject, but also an excellent public speaker who will hold the audience's interest and inject an element of humour. It is sad when we have a good subject, but the speaker is not able to keep their audience interested.
Refreshments are generally available from 09H30. Please take the opportunity to socialise before the "business" of the meeting. Reach out to different people, especially anyone that is standing alone. We have many interesting members. Introduce yourself to people and chat.

Speakers:
Please Note:
- Whilst we work hard to find speakers to cover all sorts of topics we understand not everyone will enjoy all of the talks. It is true that one cannot please all of the people all of the time. Having said that we would like to remind members that it is not for them to contact speakers directly - whether they liked them or not. If you have something to say, it should come directly to the committee. It is not the fault of speakers when their subject or talk is not well received by all members - for whatever reason. Also, if a talk receives a lot of praise, the committee can collect all your comments and pass them on with an appropriate message of thanks.
- Members need to remember that the speakers agree to come and speak to us on their passions and subjects for a mere token, and their contact is with the U3A committee. It should also be born in mind that their allocated time to speak to us is set and short, so that they often have to edit their talks.
- Please be courteous and let the committee know if you are happy or unhappy with a speaker or the content. We can then deal with the matter in an appropriate manner.
- Please also be courteous to both the speakers and other members and do not just get up and leave before the end. It is extremely rude and disconcerting. If you need/want to go early then have the decency to sit right at the very back on the ordinary seats in the auditorium - not down at the front or in the middle of rows. The fact that we are older does not excuse bad manners.
